Mysterious brain

Human brain is such a complex organ. The advanced scientific community has not been able to conclude on many of its perplexing features. However there are numerous theories that scientists have proposed by conducting various experiments.

One such experiment conducted attempts to find a relationship between the brain activity and shape of brain. More details available here. The process of thinking is itself shrouded in mystery and we are yet to understand on what basis the brain patterns are generated.

The team involved has identified results that indicate the shape of the brain matters. It is well known fact that different shapes and material produce different sounds. Using this, man has created various musical instruments.

Can this property of obtaining a specific type of sound wave using a specific shape be applied to brain too? The researchers involved in the above study respond positively. They also believe that it could shed some light on explaining few other nature’s wonders.

See this video to get a glimpse of such unsolved mysteries of brain.

In the current practical world, it is not unjust to ask “Where can this be applied?”. It seems the intention is to find a way to use the outcome of this research to diagnose and treat consciousness disorders.

However only time will tell if the research has been fruitful with respect to its intentions. It is only worth if it can benefit the society by some means.

Man is what he makes of himself

The way one grows from the time of birth until death is the essence of life. Nobody has a definite answer about what will happen after death however one definitely gets many opportunities during the course of an entire lifetime to learn the right ways of leading life.

Of course when the argument begins, many would not hesitate to immediately drag the subject of destiny and attempt to hide behind its mysterious ways. But how far does it really play a role in one’s life? See my other post related on this topic

The legendary scientist, inventor & engineer, Alexander Graham Bell, who is famous for his invention of telephone rightly said “A man, as a general rule, owes very little to what he is born with - a man is what he makes of himself”. It is true that our upbringing, surroundings and environment in which we grow up matters.

During the course of our growth we come across many situations that make us rethink about our life. There will be occasions where we are tempted to think that life is not worth living. However it is in these turning points we will have to make use of our innate abilities instead of meekly surrender to destiny.

The intellectuals are quick to acquire the latent knowledge, educate themselves and move forward. One often needs to remind oneself that every cloud has a silver lining
Man is what he makes of himself
All of us have certainly the power to analyze the circumstances confronting us, think in the right direction and make the right decisions. Thereby we have the ability to lead ourselves into the righteous path and thus improve the quality of our life.

Let us not lose hope in our own abilities to set and achieve our goals properly. Let us not forget that we write the story of our own life; we decide what we become.

Don’t forget to laugh heartily

Life without laughter would be tough to even imagine!
In the current world, people are crazier than ever to get into a fitness regime. They go into extremes by working out very hard and maintaining a strict diet to maintain a slim look.

When something doesn’t seem to work, they are lured into an esoteric medicine camp that offers a magical potion which can provide them whatever they wish for akin to a modern day Aladdin’s genie.

However people fail to understand that holistic well-being of a person comprises of not only physical fitness but also the person’s attitude, behavior & conduct in daily activities. Not surprisingly the way we think and put our brain to work matters most.

All of these point that one’s state of mind has a long lasting impact on health. It may sound silly but there is a simple means to achieve this blissful state and the good part is that it does not cost anything. Want to know this secret? It is: Laughter.

Charlie Chaplin's quote about laughter
Amazed? There are numerous benefits of laughter. You will be astonished to see lot of material on the web that vouches the various advantages of laughter. Medical science has evidence that laughter makes one healthier – physically as well as mentally. Some quick facts can be seen here

Its impact on different body muscles, chemicals released within have been researched and documented. And what’s more, it is natural to us. Or it isn’t ? Probably, yes, we have lost that natural ability to laugh!

Pitifully, to bridge the gap, there are laughter clubs that have mushroomed with an intention to make people flex their funny bone. Just observe kids, they tend to draw out laughter in everything that they come across.

We have been through that phase; we have the inherent ability to genuinely laugh our way to a great life. Charlie Chaplin thus rightly quoted “A day without laughter is a day wasted”.

There is no secret ingredient!

According to the animated movie Kung-Fu Panda, the dragon scroll is supposed to be very powerful and claimed to be containing the ultimate key to the World’s greatest knowledge. This would be made available to only the privileged ones who master advanced skills and are honored to be known as Dragon Warriors.

It so happens that Po (a giant Panda), the protagonist becomes Dragon Warrior in unusual circumstances and is handed over the Dragon Scroll. But when Po opens it, he is astonished and at the same time very disappointed to see that it turns out to be utterly blank. He vividly sees his own reflection in the universally admired scroll.

His hopes of rescuing the citizens of valley of peace, his close friends and his father Peng from the wrath of villain are dashed.

Interestingly, later during a casual chat with his father, Peng who runs a restaurant talks to him about his opinion on life. Peng reveals during the climax that to make a dish special one doesn’t have to add anything special but just have to believe it special.

“There is no secret ingredient” he tells his adopted cute Panda about his famous secret ingredient soup. Suddenly it dawns upon the Panda that the dragon scroll indeed held the life’s fundamental essence.

It is the individual who has to learn to believe in himself and perform his actions in the righteous manner. Armed with this new found realization, Panda wins battle against the villain.
Knowledge of dragon scroll - there is no secret ingredient

It is only wise to understand this latent message and lead our lives accordingly. One may read a lot of scriptures, write many different books, attend preaching sessions or even deliver sermons but unless one believes that he is special and committed to perform virtuous actions, he is lost in the vagaries of life.

If this wisdom of secret ingredient is imbibed in one’s actions, a person can fight and defeat any tough villain in life. Unlike the movie, this knowledge is not limited to only privileged ones. So, what do you think about the secret ingredient?

Distance the worries

There is no one on this earth who has spent an entire lifetime without worries. The sages and enlightened ones who have renounced the material world are possibly better off than the worldly people however they too are not spared by the mind’s unrest at some time in their life.

In the Yaksha prashna (one of the episodes in Mahabharatha), to a question asked by Yaksha, Yudhishtira provides an answer that can be food for thought. “What is it which is more numerous than straws?”, Yaksha poses the question. The Pandava replies “Our worries are more numerous than straws”.

We are constantly bogged down by our anxiety, troubles about the problems that we are facing; we are about to face and more importantly problems that we imagine to be occurring at a later point in time. As Yudhishtira points out they are numerous. You find a solution to one of the problems and within no time another worry pops out and their count keeps increasing causing the torment to never cease.

The disturbances caused in the mind are so intense that we are consumed by them. The unsound condition of mind cannot differentiate between the assumptions and realities. It continuously goes on working to find solutions to the problems that are not even real and in the process create more real problems.

The situation leads to a vicious cycle of constant perturbation. Thus it is mentioned in one of the subhashitas that there is a subtle difference between being worrisome and being dead. The Sanskrit word chintA means worry and chitA means pyre. Only a small difference (dot - anuswara bindu) distinguishes one from the other.

Thus it is told that the pyre burns the dead, while worry burns the living.

Let us learn to consciously keep away our worries at a safe distance before we are engulfed by its flames.

Don't worry and be happy
